Project Description


Drastic on plastic is our proposed solution to what has become a massive environmental problem. Plastics - such as packaging, are finding their way pretty much everywhere, including some of our beautiful waterways, our oceans, and our parklands. But we propose ideas to help prevent, reduce and recycle plastics, using a three point system, that will help motivate people to keep this world healthy and clean for future generations.


Data Story


We're passionate about cleaning up plastic from our waterways and environment, and publicly available data from Melbourne Water and Sustainability Water were used to support our idea. We also used Australian recycling data, research on micro-plastics and the predicted impact of Victoria's new container deposit scheme.

Proactively reducing rubbish and pollution in our waterways

When rubbish and pollutants enter our waterways, it harms our aquatic life and spoils the amenity of our community spaces. How can we use open data to proactively reduce rubbish and common pollutants from entering our waterways so that we protect our natural environment and keep our rivers and creeks clean today, so that we can enjoy them tomorrow?

Markets for recycled organic products made from food and garden organics

Food waste occurs from the farm to restaurants to households. When nutrients and carbon are buried in landfill, there is significant impact on the environment and public health through greenhouse gas emissions, pollution, biodiversity loss and resource depletion. How might we support the case for processing food waste into recycled organic products?
