Project Description

Homelessness

Include a plug for services

People coming to Melbourne because the homelessness services are better than anywhere else in Oz

An opportunity to change the face of homelessness - Something about culture - There’s a community -We’re not drug addicts, we’re not abusive, we’re just real humans who fall in to this situation

A story of the missing data - What’s not showing up in the data?

Homelessness stats reported in the media vs what’s in the government data

Something about homelessness and anonymity.

Data Story

We took a broad sample of datasets, including
ABS Census 2016 (Estimating Homelessness)
AskIzzy Open Data Portal (Service Supply / Demand, Demographics)
AIHW Open Data (Number of months homeless, Specialist Homelessness Services Collection data cubes)
ASGS Shapefiles

And produced a set of statistics, visualisations and data stories that challenge stereotypes about homelessness.

Challenge Entries

Helping a social impact ‘start up’ (small organisation) to tell their story

Small and informal community/interest groups who have formed to solve local problems need data to know if their activities are making a difference and to re-design programs. How can we help these groups tell their story through data so they can seek support (political, financial, and on the ground) by showing how their programs are working, and decide where to focus next?

Eligibility: Use any open dataset to support your entry.

🌟 Telling Stories with Open Data

In recent years, data story telling has emerged as a powerful and engaging form of communication. Using any data that you can find on data.vic tell us an interesting story in the form of a feature article or video report.

Eligibility: The use of any dataset featured on data.vic or data accessed through developer.vic.gov.au. Entries that cross reference Victorian government data with other sources will score highly.
