Project Description

A sustainable & optimized way of public transport co-existing with personal transport, is the need of the hour
- to reduce carbon emissions
- to make travel safer during pandemic
- to determine & encourage more people to use public transport / walk (where ever possible)

In new normal more people are using private transport, which means more emissions and under utilization of public infrastructure. This is only expected to grow during recovery from Pandemic as seen in other cities like Brisbane.

This can be improved through park and ride where public can park for free and then continue ahead with public transport, or by providing better traffic and parking information to reduce travel time and emissions. All of which can be encouraged by Reward system.

Data Story

Current situation of Public Transport in Victoria was interpreted from
https://www.infrastructurevictoria.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Transporting-Melbournes-Recovery-January-2021-FINAL.pdf & could see reduction in number of people using the transport during pandemic.

Also we could clearly see that Pandemic has also increased the number of people using their own means for transport from https://chartingtransport.com/category/greenhouse-gas-emissions/ & https://www.ntc.gov.au/sites/default/files/assets/files/Carbon%20dioxide%20emissions%20intensity%20for%20new%20Australian%20light%20vehicles%202018.pdf

Also the pedestrain density was determined using the data set in http://www.pedestrian.melbourne.vic.gov.au/#date=06-08-2021&time=10 & used in the app to recommend them to take alternate routes while they are walking around the city.

Green house Gas Emissions

Description of Use This data on Green house Gas Emissions also justifies the need for PTV reimagined

Data Set

Current situation of Public Transport in Victoria

Description of Use This data set clearly shows that people are hesitant to use public transport during or post pandemic situation & started using their own means of transport. This justifies the need for PTV re-imagined to stay ahead for a Sustainable Future & Adapting to New Normal

Challenge Entries

Transport - Transitioning to COVID-Normal

How do we better understand the transport options available to support people getting back to work and school as we transition to COVID-Normal, as well as learn more about impacts and opportunities for the broader transport system and associated services (logistics, freight, parking, infrastructure etc)?

Eligibility: Participants must use one or more datasets from Data.Vic.
