Project Description

Our vision at DataGurus is to solve complex challenges faced by governments, businesses and citizens through effective and efficient use of data. We bring diverse skillsets to the table with a unique lens to problem solving. Our team is passionate about using data and evolving tools to derive actionable insights which can improve decision-making.

Traffic, congestion, long commutes have become global challenges with increase in population living and migrating to urban areas across different countries. Nearly more than half of the global population resides in cities which has aggregated the burden on the urban infrastructure. Cities represent two-thirds of global energy consumption and account for more than 70 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. An OECD report indicates that total demand for urban passenger transport will more than double by 2050, compared to 2015. There is a strong emphasis for Australia to achieve its net-zero greenhouse gas emissions target by 2050 (Mckinsey&Co).
Over the past few years, there has been a rise and emergence of different modes of mobility including shared commute options such as ride sharing and e-scooters needing additional considerations for adapting the urban infrastructure. There are additional requirements to consider from the Transport sector emissions reduction pledge for Victoria such as :
- By 2030, ~50 percent of the new light vehicles will comprise of Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV)
- From 2025, new transport bus purchases will be ZEVs
- 400 ZEVs are being added to the Victorian Government fleet by 2023
- By 2030, active transport will make up 25 percent of mode share

Our solution provides insights to government and stakeholders across correlation between public transport usage, vehicle registration, fuel types, carbon emissions and availability of bike infrastructure in Victoria and across Australia. We have identified key metrics from publicly available government data sets on transport, emissions and infrastructure. Non-renewable fuel-type vehicles (petrol-based followed by diesel-based vehicles) constitute the majority of passenger vehicle market in Australia. There has been a decline in active modes of transport (e.g. cycling and walking) with changes and evolution in occupation and work modes across the urban areas in Victoria. We have considered example digital twin solution for better visualisation of active data to inform decision-making across urban infrastructure for smarter mobility. The solution considers a hyperscale cloud platform to examine an "as-a-service" model to envision an urban infrastructure digital twin. We have proposed next steps to improve existing active transport infrastructure in Victoria with focus on sustainability, health, multi-modal transport network, and improve community engagement and growth in local opportunities.

We have developed dashboards to inform government and citizens on mobility in Victoria across Metropolitan and regional areas, and need for strategic cycling corridors. There is a focus on sustainability with increase in EV uptake over the past few years. Petrol-based vehicles are still the most common form of transport across Australia. "Car, as a Driver" is the most common commute type in Australia. The dashboard provides a comparison across different Australian states based on fuel trends, vehicle type and carbon emissions. Additionally, it informs stakeholders on shift in working patterns over the decades, rise of professional services occupations, and use of public transport and vehicles as per household types.
We have developed a high-fidelity "SmartMove" App to inform the community on the initiatives which they can take to drive Australia's towards its sustainability goals and make a positive impact on the community.

Together with the community, DataGurus aims to improve insights and decision-making on urban infrastructure and help make a positive and greener impact on the planet.

Data Story

Our solution focussed on analysing the trends across vehicle registrations, sustainability, and infrastructure across Australian and broader global context. We generated insights and correlations across vehicle registrations in Australia, carbon emissions, bike network, public transport usage, household types and evolving modes of mobility. We proposed digital solutions using public hyper scalar cloud platforms and services to improve active data insights and decision-making for improved urban infrastructure. The solution provided next steps for development of alternate modes of transport in Victoria. The solution was supported by dashboards for visualisation and "SmartMove" app for tracking and making informed choices on the modes of transport and contribute towards sustainability.
We followed a structured methodology for generating insights from data (underpinned by considerations for data governance):
- Data Collection: The smart mobility data is stored across government departments, businesses and individuals. These sources were utilised for extraction of data to support our analysis.
- Data Ingestion: Data was ingested from various publicly available government data sources. This data was semi-structured and structured for analysis.
- Data Transformation: Transport, emission and infrastructure data was validated for any errors, cleaned and transformed for further processing.
- Data Storage: We stored the data sets in a data base for easy access to generate insights
- Data Visualisation: We performed predictive analysis and visualisation on vehicle registration and urban infrastructure metrics across Australia. This will help to identify considerations for urban infrastructure in Victoria to improve smart mobility across the state.
