Project Description


We have developed Yours Outdoors, an App designed to find the best park and outdoor facilities for you and your friends.


Data Story


For the development of this App, we used data from the Australian Government datasets webpage – data.gov.au‘Park Facilities and Asset Locations’, which was the starting point to generate data to be incorporated with Google search engine results based on current location or suburb and/or postcode for all locations. Following that, “live” data from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) was incorporated into the product and returned timely updates on weather conditions. The search was then completed using filtered data from the ‘Park Facilities and Asset Locations’ dataset, based on user preference for the type of facilities needed. The result was then incorporated once more into Google to generate navigation, with an additional option to send the location to a friend. The App also incorporated additional options for Social Media interface (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter), a rating system to allow users to share their experience, and the possibility to report on maintenance issues and/or services that may be required.

Our developed App has the capacity to be expanded and used in other regional areas of Australia. It also has a user-friendly interface that could easily be linked to an already fully functional TransLink Transport website (e.g. Gold Coast) available for both, Android and Apple users. Further improvements and applications can be the use for water resource planning and management, Indigenous Languages and ultimately, the collection of data for Government and private agencies.

Ideas to engage upper primary and lower secondary school students (with advantages for community learning) in learning about the water cycle (source to tap). We want them to understand where water comes from (sources), the different types of water (drinking, recycled, classes of water), how and why it is treated (health), how we move it (infrastructure) and how we use it (drinking, cooking, commercially, fires, toilets, sanitation, washing, in the home). The ideas should highlight why water is so important for our survival. Ideas should be fun, interactive and educational. The engagement should be relevant to the Australian School Curriculum, adaptable to water organisations and schools around Australia and sustainable.

That changes each year. Water efficiency was a focus around the millennium drought. We want new, innovative and untapped ideas on ways to be efficient with water use.
